Syria/Alawites: Paris Suggests EU Sanctions on Individuals Accountable for Abuses

Paris – On Monday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced via X that he has advocated for sanctions against those accountable for civilian abuses along the Alawite coast in Syria, though he did not elaborate further.

Tensions flared on March 6 in a largely Alawite village situated in Syria’s Latakia province, following the arrest of a wanted individual by security forces.

The situation escalated rapidly into armed clashes when members of the Alawite Muslim minority, viewed by authorities as loyal to Bashar al-Assad, began firing upon various security force positions.

In retaliation, civilians from the Alawite community, to which Assad belongs, became the targets of aggression.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), at least 1,476 civilians, predominantly Alawites, have lost their lives as a result of the violence.

The European Union is set to allocate nearly 2.5 billion euros in international aid to Syria over this year and the next. (March 17, 2025)

So, Paris is throwing around sanctions like confetti at a wedding, while the reality on the ground is more chaotic than a football match in a pub. 🎉 But hey, at least we can all raise a glass to “doing something” from a safe distance, right? 🍷

Oh brilliant, just what we need—Paris flexing its muscles with sanctions while the rest of the world watches the Alawites play a deadly game of ‘who can be the bigger victim.’ 🇫🇷💸 Just a casual Tuesday in geopolitics, eh? 😏

Isn’t it just delightful how Paris thinks slapping on some sanctions will fix decades of chaos? 🙄 Maybe they should just send a nice postcard instead—”Wish you were peaceful!” ✈️📬

  4. Oh, brilliant move by Paris! Just what we need—more sanctions to really show those Alawites who’s boss. I’m sure they’ll be shaking in their boots over a few EU fines while the rest of us are left to sort out the mess. 🙄💶

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “we care” like a nice round of sanctions while we sip our lattes in Paris. 🙄 Meanwhile, the locals just love a good game of “who can survive longer,” don’t they?
