Berlin (Eurotoday) – German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced that Germany is committing an additional 300 million euros in aid for Syrians through the United Nations and selected organizations. She made this statement ahead of an EU-led donor conference in Brussels.
Baerbock emphasized that more than half of the allocated funds will directly support the people in Syria, bypassing the transitional government. The aid will be used to provide food, healthcare, emergency shelters, and protective measures for vulnerable individuals, according to the German foreign ministry.
Additionally, Syrian refugees and host communities in Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Turkey will also receive assistance, she stated.
Baerbock reiterated the importance of an inclusive political strategy to secure a peaceful future for Syria.
“As Europeans, we stand together for the people of Syria, for a free and peaceful Syria,”
She affirmed.
The German Foreign Minister also urged the transitional government to investigate the killing of hundreds of civilians in Alawite villages and to ensure those responsible are held accountable. Several days of intense clashes in Syria’s coastal region this month saw loyalists of ousted President Bashar al-Assad confronting the country’s new Islamist rulers.
Baerbock’s vision for a peaceful Syria
Two months ago, at the beginning of 2025, the German foreign minister met Syria’s new de facto leaders in Damascus, marking the first visit by a senior European official since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad.
During her visit, Baerbock held discussions with Syria’s de facto leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammed al-Julani, in the Syrian capital. Her trip comes at a time when Western governments are opening channels of communication with al-Sharaa’s Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
“A political solution must be reached with France’s allies, the Kurds, so that they are fully integrated into this political process that is beginning today,”
Baerbock stated after meeting with civil society representatives in Syria.
Following her discussions with the new Syrian administration, she stated:
“In our talks today we made clear Europe will support [Syria] but Europe will not be a financier of Islamist structures.”
“Ethnic and religious groups involving men as well as women … must be involved in the constitutional process and in a future Syrian government,”
She added.

Oh, great, another €300 million in aid—because if there’s anything Syria needs right now, it’s more of our generous wallets and less actual solutions. 😂 Let’s hope the transitional government has a better plan for that cash than they do for their current mess!

Oh brilliant, another €300 million for Syria—because clearly, throwing money at problems has worked wonders in the past! 💸 Meanwhile, I’ll just grab my lederhosen and wait for the next Oktoberfest to fund my own “peaceful” endeavors. 🍻

Oh brilliant, another €300 million to sprinkle on Syria while our own potholes are auditioning for a role in the next horror film. Maybe we should just send a map instead—clearly, someone’s lost their way! 😏💸

Another €300 million for Syria? Brilliant! I suppose they think money grows on trees in Berlin—maybe we should plant some in the Bundestag! 😉🌳

Oh brilliant, just what Syria needed—another €300 million from Germany! Because clearly, the last few billion didn’t do the trick, did they? 🙄💸
