Budapest (Eurotoday) – Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto considers Ukraine’s attack on the TurkStream gas pipeline infrastructure as a violation of Hungary’s sovereignty.
In a Facebook post, he stated:
My Russian colleague Sergey Lavrov informed me by phone that overnight, a Ukrainian drone had attacked the Russkaya station, a key compressor facility of the TurkStream gas pipeline. Russian air defenses neutralized three drones. The TurkStream pipeline ensures the reliability of natural gas supplies to Hungary, so any potential disruption of the pipeline could severely impact our energy security.
The Hungarian minister further emphasized:
Energy security is a matter of sovereignty, and such attacks must be regarded as an attack on sovereignty. The European Commission recently assured that Ukraine would not target the gas pipeline infrastructure leading to the European Union. Therefore, we call on the European Commission to immediately clarify whether it stands by its guarantees.
The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Lavrov had informed his Hungarian counterpart about Ukraine’s attempted attack on the TurkStream infrastructure. The conversation was initiated by the Hungarian side.
Why is the TurkStream pipeline vital for Hungary?
In February, Hungary secured energy security assurances from the European Commission. These discussions included talks with Ukraine regarding the continuation of Russian gas transit to Central Europe, the sustained transit of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline, and a commitment from the Ukrainian armed forces not to attack the TurkStream pipeline, which delivers Russian gas to Hungary.
Hungary has tied compliance with these conditions to the European Union’s sanctions policy against Russia and discussions on Ukraine’s accession to the bloc.
The country continues to receive the majority of its gas under long-term contracts with Gazprom via the TurkStream pipeline and its extensions through Bulgaria and Serbia. According to Hungary’s estimates, this supply amounted to 5.6 billion cubic meters in 2023, while in 2024, it reached as much as 7.6 billion cubic meters.
