Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized that a cease-fire alone would not be sufficient, warning that Russian President Vladimir Putin has violated truce agreements “25 times” over the past decade.
“It’s crucial for us to have President Trump’s support,” Zelenskyy stated. “He wants to end the war, but no one desires peace more than we do.”
The Ukrainian leader also signaled willingness to move forward with a minerals agreement, calling it “the first step toward security guarantees.” However, he stressed that such a deal would not be enough. “A cease-fire without security guarantees is dangerous for Ukraine,” he warned. “We’ve been fighting for three years, and the Ukrainian people need to know that America is on our side.”
Zelenskyy is set to meet with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Downing Street on Saturday afternoon, according to British media reports. Starmer will then host a security summit with European leaders on Sunday to discuss measures to support Ukraine.
Following a tense Oval Office meeting, European leaders have affirmed their backing for Zelenskyy. French President Emmanuel Macron, Germany’s likely next chancellor Friedrich Merz, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen all issued statements reinforcing their commitment to Kyiv.
