Former French President François Hollande offered a critical assessment of Emmanuel Macron’s recent trip to Washington, arguing that the visit would have been more effective if other leaders had accompanied him. Although Hollande did not blame Macron—who previously served as his economy minister—for engaging with former U.S. President Donald Trump, he insisted that “seduction and argumentation” would not be successful in dealing with Trump.
When asked whether the trip had produced “satisfying results,” as French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot claimed, Hollande bluntly responded, “No, because I’m lucid.”
Hollande served as president in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea. Alongside former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, he helped negotiate the Minsk agreements between Russia and Ukraine. These accords aimed to establish a cease-fire but ultimately failed to prevent Russian President Vladimir Putin from launching a full-scale invasion three years ago.
At 70, Hollande is frequently mentioned as a potential candidate for the 2027 French presidential election.
