Nederename (Eurotoday) – Twelve homes in Nederename had to be urgently evacuated due to a gas leak in Oudstrijdersstraat, a district within the Oudenaarde sub-municipality. The incident occurred when public works accidentally damaged a gas pipeline, prompting the fire department to establish a 50-meter exclusion zone.
Residents from the twelve affected houses evacuated as a precautionary measure following the gas leak in Oudstrijdersstraat. The situation arose when public works accidentally struck a gas pipeline, compelling the fire department to create a safety perimeter. As part of the response, seven individuals were evacuated from their homes for additional security. On-site, Fluvius personnel are actively working to resolve the issue.
The gas leak happened during utility drilling operations early in the morning, shortly after sunrise. Workers immediately alerted emergency responders, allowing firefighters to set up a 50-meter safety boundary. Due to the pipeline damage affecting multiple residential properties, safety concerns remain a priority.
Mayor Marnic De Meulemeester (Open VLD) commented:
The situation is under control. The preventively evacuated residents are currently being well cared for in the Sint-Vaast community center. This concerns the residents of 12 surrounding houses. We are closely monitoring the situation.
The disruption is expected to last for a prolonged period, according to Jonathan Jouret of the Flemish Ardennes Fire Brigade, as necessary repairs must be completed first.
