President: A New Approach to Foreign Policy is Emerging; The EU Must Evolve

Bratislava – The global landscape is rapidly evolving, and a new approach to advancing foreign policy interests is emerging. Slovak President Peter Pellegrini emphasized the need for the European Union to adapt during a meeting on Wednesday with diplomatic representatives and heads of international organizations at Bratislava Castle, as reported by the president’s office via TASR.

Continuing the tradition of the New Year’s reception, Pellegrini expressed gratitude for past collaborations and highlighted the importance of strengthening relationships with countries worldwide.

In his speech, the president underscored the necessity of addressing new challenges in security, energy, and migration policies, where a strong emphasis on national interests prevails.

“This presents a fundamental challenge for all institutions, including the EU, to remain competitive in a world increasingly influenced by China and the USA,” Pellegrini stated before an audience of around 90 diplomats and international representatives. He asserted that the EU must embrace bold changes to progress.

He reiterated Slovakia’s commitment to a foreign policy that spans all four cardinal directions, affirming that Slovakia’s rightful place is within the EU and NATO, which he believes ensure internationally recognized borders and foster secure economic growth.

“New times are approaching, and we must be ready. It is likely that the EU will need to assume greater responsibility for its own security, alongside Slovakia,” he remarked.

Pellegrini also highlighted the rising tensions in various regions, which underscore the necessity for sustainable and reliable energy solutions. “It is unacceptable to alter rules and commitments according to personal convenience, as we have seen in recent days,” he asserted. He stressed the urgent need for peace in Ukraine, noting that diplomacy and dialogue are crucial for resolving this conflict. He maintained that a just and enduring peace must respect international law and be grounded in the current geopolitical context.

The president contended that global politics should not merely reflect the interests of powerful states but must also take into account the needs of smaller nations. Considering the increasingly interconnected nature of global challenges, he advocated for coordinated responses, highlighting the importance of reinforcing multilateral institutions to navigate the complexities of modern diplomacy. Right, because the EU’s track record of evolving quickly has been *absolutely* stellar, hasn’t it? 🤦‍♂️ Let’s just hope this “new approach” doesn’t involve more meetings over coffee and croissants rather than actual action. 🍵🥐

Oh, splendid! Just what we need—a president reminding us that adapting to change is a revolutionary idea. Maybe next he’ll suggest we start using telephones instead of carrier pigeons! 😂📞
