The European Union’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, announced Monday that she extended an open invitation to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to attend the bloc’s regular meeting of foreign ministers. Speaking to journalists, Kallas explained that she had invited Rubio “to explain the views of the United States.”
While Rubio opted not to attend this week’s meeting, Kallas revealed that they later discussed key geopolitical issues during a phone conversation. Topics included Russia’s war in Ukraine, Iran’s destabilizing activities, and the challenges posed by China.
When asked by POLITICO whether Rubio plans to attend the upcoming February 12 meeting in Brussels, the U.S. State Department did not immediately provide a response.
Ukrainian officials are keen to engage with their U.S. counterparts regarding the Trump administration’s proposed strategy to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. Although the administration has publicly shared its vision for resolving the conflict, Kyiv has yet to be approached through formal diplomatic channels.
President Trump has repeatedly expressed confidence in his ability to swiftly end Russia’s full-scale invasion while emphasizing the importance of securing favorable terms for Ukraine. Ukrainian leaders have applauded Trump’s firm rhetoric and stance on Russia, with some describing it as exactly the type of approach President Vladimir Putin fears.
“We want the war to end—that much is clear,” Rubio remarked earlier in January. “The president is determined to promote peace and resolve conflicts, though it is bound to be a complex process.”
Rubio acknowledged the difficulties inherent in achieving peace, further elaborating, “When bringing an end to a conflict where neither side can achieve its maximum goals, both parties will inevitably have to compromise on certain issues.”
