Brussels – Ukraine took a significant step towards European Union membership last summer, yet it continues to await the initiation of its first negotiation chapters. The current aim is to commence this process as soon as March.
“Sweden is advocating for this development. We’ve made notable progress,” stated EU Minister Jessica Rosencrantz following a breakfast meeting focused on Ukraine in Brussels on Tuesday.
However, the launch of negotiations requires unanimous consent from all EU member states, a prospect that is uncertain due to persistent skepticism, particularly from Hungary and Slovakia.
EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas, who participated in the breakfast meeting, remains optimistic.
“The EU comprises 27 member states, each with its own democratic processes. It can be challenging, but historically, we have always found a way to reach consensus,” Kallas remarked.
