Seville (Spain) – On Friday, the European People’s Party will put forward a proposal for Andalusian President Juanma Moreno to lead the European Committee of the Regions in the upcoming term. This appointment is expected to elevate the status of the Andalusian community within European institutions, as highlighted by the Andalusian government spokesperson, Carolina España.
During a press conference following a Council of Government meeting, España revealed that the proposal for President Moreno to chair the European Committee of the Regions marks a significant milestone in enhancing the prestige and influence of Andalusia, something unprecedented in the region’s history.
The leadership of this body will rotate between the Popular and Socialist groups, with the Socialists designating Kata Tutto, the mayor of Budapest, for their term. Consequently, the forthcoming president nominated by the PP will be Juanma Moreno, who currently serves as the Vice President.
According to España, securing this presidency will position Andalusia at the forefront of European institutions, establishing it as “the voice” of regions in discussions with the European Parliament, European Commission, and the Council of Europe once the term begins.
The election is set for February, where the Popular and Socialist groups will determine which region will chair the committee for the first two and a half years, followed by another region for the remainder of the term, as noted by España.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for Andalusia,” stated the Andalusian government spokesperson, emphasizing that this position will be a significant advancement for the “south of Europe” and will grant the community an “unprecedented level of European representation.”
España also reminded attendees that Moreno is currently the vice president of the European Committee of the Regions, a role in which he has consistently advocated for issues such as climate policy and strategies addressing depopulation. (January 28)
