Geel (Eurotoday) – In the early hours of the morning, a family of 5 in Geel escaped a devastating house fire when unusual noises woke the father. Within seconds, he was able to pull his wife and 3 kids through a window, but before the flames consumed the ground floor. That fire started in the kitchen and left the house temporarily devastated with severe damage and heavy smoke.
A house fire barely missed a family in Geel when the father’s quick response saved his wife and 3 kids. The house on Poiel Street in Geel burned down shortly before 1 a.m. When the father of the family heard an unusual noise, he was alerted and went to investigate, having found that the kitchen on the ground floor was on fire. He recognised the danger and guided his family to safety by way of a window on the first floor when he first aided their escape through the roof.
The father’s decisive action saved his family. Bart Staquet of the Kempen Fire Zone, the spokesperson for the area, stated that:
“They were very lucky. The man was able to bring his wife and three children to safety through a window on the first floor.”
Emergency services arrived and stated:
“Our ambulance arrived first, and the family was already outside.”
The fire was contained, but it caused considerable damage. Heavy smoke permeated the upper floors of the house, and the kitchen and living room were severely burned. It is considered temporarily uninhabitable. The family was taken to the hospital to be treated after inhaling smoke in the escape. They were advised to stay with relatives, recover, and work out to move in after repairs.
Why is fire safety more crucial than ever?
Although it’s unknown what caused the fire, it’s another reminder of the urgent need for fire safety and early detection. The Kempen Fire Zone notes that the father’s timely response and correct evacuation route were key to the family’s survival.
In past similar incidents, preparedness has usually been the deciding factor between life and death. For instance, smoke detectors were absent in a 2023 house fire in Antwerp that ended pathetically when tenants failed to respond. By comparison, another family in Leuven was unharmed the same year because of the working alarms and a practised escape plan.
They’ve also repeatedly advised residents to focus their efforts on ensuring smoke detectors were in place and there were easy exits.
“This family was fortunate, but not everyone gets this chance,”
Staquet noted.
“We encourage everyone to review their fire safety measures to prevent tragedies.”
