Davos (Switzerland) – Ursula von der Leyen emphasized a pragmatic approach towards the new American administration while affirming that the European Union will uphold its core principles and safeguard its interests. Her remarks came during one of the opening speeches at the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos on Tuesday.
While she did not directly mention Donald Trump, who is set to address the forum via videoconference on Thursday, or Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang, who spoke immediately after her, von der Leyen strongly endorsed the Paris Agreement on climate change, calling it “humanity’s best hope” — a position at odds with Trump’s intention to withdraw from the accord.
“Europe will continue to promote cooperation, not only with our traditional allies but also with countries sharing common interests,” von der Leyen stated.
She revealed plans for a visit to India and pledged that the EU is prepared to “extend a hand” to China and enhance its relationship with Beijing. (January 21, 2025)
