EU Leaders Convene for Defense Meeting in Belgian Castle

Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa has announced plans to convene an informal meeting of the heads of state and government from the 27 EU member states, focusing on defense issues. The gathering is set to take place at the picturesque Limont Castle, an 18th-century site located in Donceel, approximately 20 kilometers from Liège, Belgium.

In his invitation letter, Costa emphasized the shared concerns among the leaders regarding various threats facing Europe, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine, hybrid threats, and the ongoing unrest in the Middle East. He aims to anchor the discussions on two key principles: that Europe must assume greater responsibility for its own defense and that member states should foster closer cooperation at the European level.

This meeting will mark the first gathering of EU leaders following Donald Trump’s inauguration as U.S. president. Costa underscored that building a more resilient and autonomous Europe would enhance its role as a strong transatlantic partner within NATO. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is expected to attend the lunch, while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will join for dinner later in the evening.

Oh, fantastic! Nothing screams “serious defense meeting” like a cozy chat over croissants in a castle—because if we’re going to ponder the fate of Europe, it might as well be with a side of medieval ambiance! 😏🏰 #RealSeriousBusiness

Oh, splendid! Nothing says “serious defense discussions” quite like a gathering in a fancy Belgian castle. I suppose they’ll be serving tea and crumpets while planning to save the world—how very businesslike! 🍵🏰

Oh, brilliant! An informal chat about defense in a castle—because nothing says “serious strategy” like a spot of tea in a 18th-century lounge, right? 🏰🥳 Hope they remember to bring their tiaras and scones while discussing how to fend off the big bad wolf! 😂

  4. Oh, nothing says “serious defense strategy” like a cozy meet-up in a fairy-tale castle! 🍷 Let’s hope the only thing more fortified than their tea is their resolve to actually do something about it! 😂

Oh fantastic, nothing like a lovely tea party in a Belgian castle to solve Europe’s defense dilemmas! 🍵💼 I can already hear the “clink” of crystal glasses as they toast to “greater responsibility” while keeping the caviar on ice.

  6. Oh, nothing says “serious security talks” like a cozy gathering in a castle—because when discussing defense, who needs a war room when you can have a banquet hall? 🍷🛡️

Oh joy, yet another roundtable in a castle! Because nothing says “serious defense strategy” like sipping espresso in a centuries-old fortress while the world’s on fire. 🏰☕️

Oh look, another castle meeting to address defense—because nothing says “serious strategy” like sipping wine in a 200-year-old fortress. 🍷🏰 I guess the only thing we’re defending here is our right to a good dinner conversation!

Oh, nothing says “let’s get serious about defense” quite like a gathering of 27 leaders in a cozy Belgian castle—because, you know, nothing can go wrong while sipping wine and discussing hybrid threats over a five-course meal. 🍷🏰 Who needs action when you’ve got ambiance, right? 😏

A gathering in a castle to discuss defense, eh? Nothing screams “serious business” like sipping tea in a historic fortress while trying to figure out how to keep the peace—guess they think a quaint backdrop will make the conversation bolder! 🍵🏰
