The two leaders are set to discuss strengthening cooperation between Moscow and Tehran across several areas, including trade, investment, transport, logistics, humanitarian initiatives, and pressing regional and international matters, according to a statement.
The agreement is also expected to solidify the expanding military and political alliance between the two nations.
Moscow’s relationship with Tehran has grown closer since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Iran has supplied Russia with Shahed drones, which have been used to target civilian infrastructure and power facilities in Ukraine.
In October, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov indicated that Russia was on the verge of signing a strategic partnership agreement with Iran. Later, in December, an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson revealed plans to finalize the deal by the end of January.
This move mirrors a similar agreement signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in June, through which the two nations pledged to provide mutual military support in the event of aggression.
