Ukrainian soldiers have described North Korean troops on the battlefield as formidable and far from being mere “inexperienced cannon fodder.”
“They are young, motivated, physically fit, brave, and proficient with small arms. They’re also disciplined. They have all the qualities of a good infantryman,” said Chepurnyi, a Ukrainian soldier, emphasizing their effectiveness in combat.
Yuriy Bondar, another Ukrainian soldier serving in the 80th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade, echoed this sentiment. He highlighted the North Koreans’ exceptional physical conditioning and strong mental resilience.
“The enemy does not surrender. They follow a grim protocol—detonating a grenade near their heads to end their lives if captured. Those who fall on the battlefield are doused with flammable liquid and burned,” Bondar said in a Facebook post on Sunday.
Bondar went on to note the North Korean soldiers’ impressive expertise with small arms, revealing that they have been particularly adept at targeting and downing Ukrainian drones. “They demonstrate psychological resilience. Picture this: one soldier runs to draw attention while another, hidden in ambush, skillfully shoots down a drone with precise fire,” he explained. “Underestimating such an enemy is a mistake that will always lead to defeat.”
He concluded with a sobering comparison, quoting a commander who remarked that the North Korean soldiers make the infamous Wagner mercenaries of 2022 appear inexperienced by contrast. “And I believe him,” Bondar added.
