A widespread national strike in Belgium is expected to cause significant disruption to public transportation in Brussels on Monday, as well as to rail and air travel across the country.
Belgian trade unions have organized a general strike on January 13 to protest against government proposals for pension reform.
The public transport system in the capital city is anticipated to face major interruptions, according to a warning from STIB, the operator of Brussels’ metro, tram, and bus services. The company has advised residents and commuters to plan alternative means of transportation.
Rail services will also face significant challenges, with only one in three trains operating between major cities, the national rail provider SNCB announced in a statement.
Air travel through Brussels Airport is likely to be heavily affected as well, with travelers at high risk of flight cancellations, according to warnings from Brussels Airlines.
