BRUSSELS (ANP) – In order for Mark Zuckerberg’s company to operate within the EU, Meta must first conduct a risk assessment and submit it to the European Commission. Any proposed changes must also adhere to the EU regulations governing internet platforms, as outlined in the Digital Services Act (DSA), according to a spokesperson for the European Commission.
He emphasized that the work of fact-checkers in the EU is founded on stringent ethical and professional standards that ensure their independence. The DSA recognizes that collaborating with “independent fact-checkers” is an effective strategy for mitigating systemic risks associated with very large online platform services. The spokesperson highlighted concerns around disinformation and potential threats to electoral processes.
If Meta fails to comply with EU regulations, it currently faces the risk of penalties, with fines potentially reaching up to 6 percent of the company’s global annual revenue.
