The Polish minister remarked that achieving Donald Trump’s proposed defense spending goal of 5 percent of GDP “will take another decade,” but added that the U.S. president-elect “should not be criticized for setting a highly ambitious target.” He argued that without such ambitious objectives, “some countries will continue to debate whether increasing defense spending is truly necessary.”
The suggested 5 percent target exceeds the current defense spending of any NATO member.
Poland, however, leads the pack, allocating 4.12 percent of its GDP to defense in 2024 and working towards increasing that to 4.7 percent this year. In comparison, the United States spent 3.4 percent of its GDP on defense last year.
