Rachel Reeves emphasized on Saturday that fostering a strong relationship with Beijing is “squarely in our national interest.” She made this statement while unveiling deals projected to bring £600 million to the U.K. economy over the next five years.
Speaking at the Beijing store of British bicycle manufacturer Brompton, Reeves reaffirmed her commitment to maintaining her fiscal strategy. “I have been very clear that our fiscal rules are non-negotiable,” she said. “We will fund day-to-day spending through tax receipts and ensure that debt is reduced as a share of GDP. The fiscal rules I outlined in the October budget are firm, and we will take the necessary steps to uphold them.”
At a joint press conference with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, Reeves underscored the importance of strengthening economic ties with China. “I believe that increasing trade and investment with an economically significant partner like China is essential for achieving my number one priority in government – economic growth,” she said.
The visit and Reeves’ statements highlight the U.K.’s focus on building closer economic cooperation with China, while adhering to strict fiscal policies aimed at ensuring long-term financial stability.
