Polish Presidency Backs Commissioner Kos’s Initiatives to Speed Up EU Enlargement

Warsaw – European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos held discussions with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski and Minister for European Affairs Adam Szlapko. Kos expressed optimism that the enlargement process could be advanced during Poland’s presidency of the EU Council, which commenced on January 1. Sikorski echoed her sentiments.

In a press conference following their meeting, Sikorski shared his hope for expediting accession talks with candidate countries over the course of Poland’s six-month presidency of the EU Council. He reaffirmed Poland’s commitment to backing the Commissioner’s initiatives in this regard.

Meanwhile, the Slovenian European Commissioner conveyed her enthusiasm for collaborating with the Polish presidency in a post on social media platform X following her meeting with Szlapko. She stated, “I am confident that during the Polish presidency, we can accelerate the EU enlargement process to levels we haven’t seen in the last decade.”

Szlapko also highlighted that EU enlargement is a top priority during Poland’s presidency. “To enhance its security, the EU must proactively shape its neighborhood in accordance with our democratic values,” he stressed.

Kos, who stepped into her role as European Commissioner for Enlargement on December 1 of the previous year, visited Warsaw at the onset of Poland’s EU Council presidency, which is centered on various security matters. Although the full European Commission was scheduled to visit Poland during this time, the trip was deferred due to President Ursula von der Leyen’s illness. (January 10)

Seems like the Polish presidency is just the ticket to speed up EU enlargement—because who doesn’t love a six-month crash course in political gymnastics? 😏 Let’s just hope they don’t trip over their own democratic values while trying to build a bigger EU family! 🍷

Isn’t it just delightful how Poland’s presidency is all about speeding things up? I mean, why take decades when you can just sprinkle some Polish magic and voilà – EU enlargement in a jiffy! 😂🇵🇱
