Budapest/Bratislava – On Tuesday, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó engaged in a phone conversation with Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár regarding the halt of natural gas transit through Ukraine. This update was shared by Szijjártó on Facebook and was reported by TASR correspondent in Budapest.
The Slovak government was initially scheduled to meet with the European Commission in Brussels on January 7 to discuss the cessation of Russian gas transit. These negotiations have been rescheduled and will now take place on January 9 in Brussels. During the meeting, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) and Minister of Economy Denisa Saková (Hlas-SD) will hold discussions with representatives of the European Commission about halting gas supplies to Slovakia.
Szijjártó noted that Ukraine, despite its aspirations to join the European Union, has complicated matters for the European economy with its recent decisions. He stated, “This particularly affects Central Europe,” referring to the consequences of Ukraine's choice not to renew its agreement with Gazprom for the transportation of Russian gas to Europe.
The Hungarian minister further emphasized the importance of respecting the association agreement between the EU and Ukraine, which includes provisions for maintaining energy transport routes.
On Wednesday, January 1, at 08:00 Moscow time (05:00 CET), Gazprom, the Russian gas company, ceased its gas supplies through Ukraine to Europe and Moldova due to Ukraine's unwillingness to extend the transit agreement. (January 7)
