Bratislava – Prime Minister Robert Fico of the Smer-SD party has announced plans to propose that Slovakia’s highest constitutional officials and coalition party leaders issue a statement regarding the country’s foreign policy direction. This announcement was made in a video shared on social media. Fico emphasized that this move is a response to the emergence of differing opinions than those advocated by Brussels, alongside a perceived erosion of fundamental democratic principles, as reported by TASR.
Fico stated, “At the Government Office of the Slovak Republic, we are closely examining the situation in several EU nations, notably Austria, Germany, France, and Romania. The rise of alternative viewpoints diverging from Brussels and the undermining of basic democratic tenets compel me to suggest that our top constitutional officials and coalition party leaders unite in making a statement that clarifies the content and standards of Slovakia’s foreign policy and the guiding principles for our international relations.”
Additionally, the Prime Minister confirmed his upcoming trip to Brussels on January 9, where he will address the suspension of gas transit through Ukraine. Further, he is scheduled to attend a meeting of the parliamentary committee on European affairs on January 10.
“Opposition members of parliament have expressed their desire to discuss my meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during this gathering, and I am more than willing to engage in that conversation,” he remarked. (January 7)
