Donald Trump Jr., eldest son of former President Donald Trump, arrived in Greenland on Tuesday for what he labeled as a private visit. However, his notable companions included conservative activist Charlie Kirk and Sergio Gor, the elder Trump’s personnel director. Former President Trump referred to them as his official representatives.
“Don Jr. and my Reps landing in Greenland. The reception has been great. They, and the Free World, need safety, security, strength, and PEACE! This is a deal that must happen. MAGA. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!” Trump wrote in a post shared on Truth Social, his proprietary social media platform.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded to the development in an interview with Danish broadcaster TV 2, expressing optimism mixed with caution. “On one hand, I am really happy regarding the rise in American interest in Greenland,” Frederiksen remarked. “But of course it is important that it takes place in a way where it is the Greenlanders’ decision, what their future holds.”
Greenland, the largest island in the world with only about 60,000 residents, was a Danish colony until it gained self-rule in 1979 and established its own parliament. It remains a territory of Denmark, with Copenhagen retaining control over its foreign affairs and defense policy.
As global powers increasingly vie for influence in the Arctic, Greenland has become a strategic focal point. Its vast mineral resources and the presence of a U.S. military base enhance its importance in global security and trade.
Frederiksen had previously dismissed Trump’s 2019 proposition to purchase Greenland as “absurd.” Nonetheless, she acknowledged the island’s growing independence movement, calling it “legitimate” while reiterating that the future of Greenland should be determined solely by its inhabitants.
