Stockholm – Food prices have surged significantly and remain at excessively high levels, according to the Social Democrats, who are calling on the European Commission to enhance its oversight of the food market within the EU.
“When prices rise uncontrollably and the reasons are unclear, we must be able to safeguard our consumers,” stated Swedish MEP Adnan Dibrani (S) during a press conference in Stockholm.
By analyzing the entire supply chain, including contracts and regulations, it becomes easier to identify unjustified price hikes. This approach signals to companies that they are under scrutiny, thereby increasing the pressure to maintain reasonable prices, according to Dibrani.
“Ultimately, if no action is taken, we should be able to enforce a price ceiling.”
This initiative, proposed by the Swedish Social Democrats and backed by the entire S&D group, has been submitted to the European Commission’s Vice President Teresa Ribera.
