Brussels – The European Commission affirmed on Monday that Elon Musk is not prohibited from expressing his support for far-right groups, while reiterating that his platform X will not be used to sway German voters.
Musk sparked controversy by declaring on X that “Only the AfD (Alternative for Germany, far-right) can save Germany,” leading to allegations of his interference in the upcoming election slated for February 23.
Additionally, he is set to conduct an interview with a leader of the AfD, which will be streamed live on X on January 9.
Within the EU, the Commission serves a regulatory function under the Digital Services Act (DSA).
According to Thomas Regnier, the Commission’s digital spokesperson, “There is nothing in the DSA that prevents a platform owner or anyone else from hosting a live stream and sharing personal opinions.”
He further emphasized that the platform must avoid giving preferential treatment or enhanced visibility to specific types of content. (January 6, 2025)
