If European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen becomes unable to fulfill her duties, Executive Vice President Teresa Ribera will step in as her replacement, the spokesperson for the EU executive confirmed on Monday.
Questions regarding the Commission’s leadership succession emerged after von der Leyen’s spokesperson revealed last week that she is suffering from severe pneumonia and had canceled her scheduled engagements for the first half of January.
Although no official designation of a temporary replacement has been necessary so far, Commission Chief Spokesperson Paula Pinho clarified the protocol: “In the order of replacement, the next colleague and member of the college would indeed be Executive Vice President Ribera.”
