Armed Individual Subdued at Prime Minister’s Office on 16 Wetstraat

Brussels (Eurotoday): A man was disarmed by the military police on January 6, 2025, at 16 Wetstraat, the location of the current Prime Minister’s office in Brussels. The occurrence was confirmed by the communication director of the outgoing Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, Barend Leyts.

Leyts said that the man was armed with a knife and reportedly threatened military personnel at the scene. Luckily, no one from the side of the military police who got involved in the operation was injured. The suspect has been arrested and is still being held at a police station as the detectives investigate his reason to act.

Military police arrested an armed man in Brussels during the morning of January 2025 at the Prime Minister’s office.  There were no losses or personal casualties among the population, and the suspect was apprehended. The event took place close to the current discussions on federal government formation. The local police confirmed that the man was arrested after making threats, thus awaiting further police assistance.

Leyts had kind words for the military police, stating that they deserve applause for keeping him from getting injured or killed because they responded quickly.

“I would like to thank the military police officers who acted so efficiently this morning.”

De Croo stated, expressing relief that no one was injured in the incident. Much has not been said about the intentions of the man, and law enforcement agents are tirelessly conducting investigations in order to unveil more information about the actions of the man. Following the event, there was a federal negotiation a few meters away from the shooting at Wetstraat 10, where negotiations on the formation of a new federal government were continued. Increased security was put in place after the clash with trigger-happy cameramen from VRT NWS ordered to stay inside after the incident. This brings to the fore issues of insecurity and safety concerns in Belgium, especially in areas of government interests like this compound.

Security concerns in Belgium

Belgium as a country has experienced growing security threats in the past few years, especially concerning episodes of violence and the use of weapons and threatened security in the country. It has faced numerous large-scale attacks that have made the country worried over acts of terror and security. As a result of these security issues, governments have raised barriers around governmental offices as well as all social places to protect both citizens and the authorities.

The increase in such occurrences has led to the consideration of increased security measures in centres of public congregation. The military police responded quickly during this latest operation, and they continued their vigorous efforts to avoid any disruption of order or attempts on key government buildings. While Belgium tries to conquer its security challenges, authorities do not neglect the idea that public security bodies should be ready to respond to urgent situations.

Moreover, this incident provides an insight into why security measures need to be taken in all public sector establishments. With new federal government negotiations taking place continuously, it underlines the importance of increased awareness among the officials and citizens as to various possible dangers which might come from public meetings and politics. In the course of the investigation of this particular case, it will be important for police to look into broader root causes that may cause such confrontations and, at the same time, ensure that the population of Belgium is reassured of the police capacity to guarantee their safety.

  1. Seems like the Prime Minister’s Office has really upped its security game—who knew all it took to get a bit of extra attention was a knife-wielding guest? 🍴🤷‍♂️ Maybe next time they could just stick with a polite email invitation for the negotiations, eh?

Just another day in Brussels, where the only thing sharper than the knives is the wit of our military police! Who knew security details could double as a live-action episode of “Survivor: Political Edition”? 😂🔪

Just another Tuesday in Brussels, where the Prime Minister’s office doubles as a stage for “Who’s Got the Sharpest Knife?” 😅 Good thing the military police are on speed dial; we wouldn’t want our politicians getting too comfy, now would we? 🥳✌️
