European Parliament Members Visit India to Discuss Digital and Consumer Policies

Mumbai (Eurotoday) – MEPs from the EP’s IMCO committee are visiting India to discuss digital regulation, consumer protection, e-commerce, and quality assurance standards.

European Parliament’s Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee (IMCO) seven MEPs are travelling to Mumbai, Pune, and Bengaluru to assist with the committee’s continued and future work on digital matters, product measures, quality assurance standards, consumer protection and e-commerce, according to EU Parliament press.

MEPs will hold meetings with Indian authorities in charge of digital regulation and consumer protection, civil society organizations, especially in the domain of consumer advocacy and protection, industry associations, including a range of European businesses, major tech firms and technological incubators, and scholarly professionals. The panel is headed by MEP Andreas Schwab, and other MEPs Dimitris Tsiodras, Idoia Mendia, Virginie Joron, Laura Ballarín Cereza and Stephanie Yon-Courtin are members of the delegation.

The IMCO committee plays a very vital role in ensuring that the EU’s single market works and consumer rights are protected. The committee focuses on developing policies that would make the single market for goods and services within the EU work efficiently. This includes consumer protection, competition, and regulation of the market.

How is the EU engaging with India on digital regulation?

The European Parliament‘s Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee has held active dialogue and engagement with India, especially in its discussions and frames of the regulation of the digital economy. Currently, the committee is discussing a Digital Services Act to create the EU as an even safer internet space. The ITI also noted engagement with Indian government officials and technology sector stakeholders to align on approaches toward regulatory policies that promote consumer protection while promoting a competitive online environment.

Oh, splendid! Nothing says “we care about digital regulation” like a posh jaunt to India while sipping chai and discussing how to protect consumers… all the way from a continent where nobody knows how to fix a simple software glitch. 🙄✨

Oh great, a squad of MEPs flying halfway across the globe to lecture India on digital regulations—because what the world really needs is more bureaucrats in suits discussing online shopping standards while sipping chai in Mumbai. 🍵 Just what I needed to hear about while stuck in traffic! 🚖

Oh, fantastic! A bunch of MEPs jetting off to India to sort out digital policies—because clearly, we all know that foreign trips are the key to solving our online woes. 🤦‍♂️ Just what we needed, more regulation!
