Elon Musk has sparked controversy in the UK by delving into a highly sensitive debate about the country’s handling of child sexual exploitation. In recent days, Musk has criticized Labour leader Keir Starmer for his past record as Britain’s top prosecutor.
The Labour government recently faced backlash after rejecting calls for a national inquiry into grooming gangs. These gangs, often composed of South Asian men, preyed on vulnerable young women in northern England. Labour has defended its decision, pointing to multiple inquiries that have already examined the issue.
One pivotal investigation, a 2014 report led by senior social worker Alexis Jay, revealed the horrific abuse of around 1,400 children in the town of Rotherham between 1997 and 2013. Jay’s report outlined systemic failures in the care system and noted that local authorities avoided confronting the predominantly Pakistani-heritage perpetrators due to fears of being labeled racist.
The findings of this report—and a later inquiry into exploitation in Oldham—have become key talking points for political figures on the British right, further polarizing the discussion.
As Musk’s remarks continue to generate buzz and draw attention, UK Health Minister Karin Smyth pushed back on Monday, calling his comments “wrong.” Smyth defended Starmer, stating that during his tenure as director of public prosecutions, he was widely “applauded” for his efforts in prosecuting grooming gangs and supporting survivors of abuse.
“It would be more helpful if Mr. Musk used his platform to support victims,” Smyth added.
