Zelzate Tunnel to Close for 80 Nights for AWV LED Lighting Upgrade

Zelzate (Eurotoday) – The Zelzate tunnel on the E34 motorway near Ghent will be closed for 80 nights to allow for the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting. The closures will be carried out in two stages, from June 16 to August 31, 2025, and from September 15 to November 7, 2025. The work is being organized by the Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV).

Located in Zelzate, a municipality in East Flanders, Belgium, the tunnel on the E34 requires upgrades due to the outdated lighting system. The current lights are not functioning effectively, and suitable replacement parts are hard to find due to their age.

AWV plans to replace the lighting with modern, energy-saving LED lights that are more efficient and environmentally friendly. Officials emphasized that the upgrade is necessary for both safety and sustainability.

Why is the Zelzate tunnel closing for 80 nights?

The project will unfold in two phases. The first phase, affecting westbound traffic towards the coast, will last from June 16 through August 31, 2025. During this time, drivers will be redirected via detour routes. The second phase—from September 15 to November 7, 2025—will focus on lanes heading toward Antwerp, again requiring detours.

To minimize disruption, the work will pause for three weeks in July, providing temporary relief for commuters. Additionally, all scheduled work will take place overnight, between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., to avoid major daytime traffic issues.

During the nighttime closures, vehicles will be rerouted over the Zelzatebrug, a bridge adjacent to the tunnel. For those traveling longer distances, AWV recommends using the E17 and E40 motorways to bypass the area and minimize potential delays.

According to AWV, the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting will reduce power consumption and lower maintenance costs, while enhancing road safety. The improvements are part of broader efforts to modernize infrastructure and support more sustainable transportation systems.

Closing the Zelzate Tunnel for 80 nights for a lighting upgrade? Clearly, they’ve mistaken “night” for “vacation”—because nothing screams “efficiency” like an extended detour party! 😂💡

Oh, fantastic! Just what we need—80 nights of tunnel solitude while they swap out lights like it’s a bloody home renovation. Guess we’ll all get to know the detour routes better than our own living rooms! 😅🚗💡

  5. Oh joy, 80 nights of closed roads for a bit of LED glamour! Because nothing screams “sustainable progress” like a half-year tunnel nap while we watch the traffic crawl like it’s a Sunday stroll in Bruges. 🚦😂

Oh, 80 nights for a bit of LED bling in the Zelzate tunnel? At this rate, I’ll need a sleeping bag and a good book just to survive the detours! 😏💡
