Ukraine Finds Its Voice Amid International Negotiations — But Pressure Mounts
Ukraine is increasingly participating in international discussions about its own future — a stark contrast to the early days of the war, when both the U.S. and Russia sidelined it from negotiations.
Despite this growing involvement, Kyiv now faces intense pressure from both Washington and Moscow to make painful territorial and economic concessions. U.S. Vice President JD Vance stated on Wednesday that Ukraine must accept the loss of some territory or risk losing American support in brokering peace, arguing that the conflict should be “frozen” along current front lines.
The latest U.S. proposal includes formally recognizing Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea — a move Ukraine has long opposed — and allows Russia to continue controlling the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, captured during the 2022 invasion, for generating energy for both countries. The plan offers Ukraine no security guarantees.
Former President Donald Trump echoed growing U.S. frustration in a Truth Social post on Wednesday, criticizing Ukraine’s reluctance to agree to the terms.
Ukrainian officials strongly rejected the proposal, calling it a win for Russian aggression. “Ukraine is ready to negotiate, not surrender,” Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
“There will be no deal that strengthens Russia’s position to regroup and attack again in the future. Ukraine will never accept the occupation of Crimea,” Svyrydenko added. “And if NATO membership is off the table, we need binding security guarantees — serious enough to prevent future aggression and credible enough to secure lasting peace.”
Opposition voices in Ukraine are also demanding clarity and transparency from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s administration about the negotiation process. “Ukrainians should hear updates on peace talks not from U.S. officials or foreign media, but from their own government,” said Iryna Gerashchenko, MP from the European Solidarity party, in a Facebook post.
As outside powers push their agendas, Kyiv continues to struggle for a settlement that preserves its sovereignty, security, and self-determination.
