Zelenskyy Calls for Strong Sanctions on Russia Before Trump Meeting

Zelenskyy emphasized the necessity of eliminating all potential supply routes and methods to bypass sanctions.

The Ukrainian president plans to meet Trump at the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week to discuss and seek clarity on the security assurances the U.S. will extend as part of a peace agreement.

This appeal for enhanced sanctions follows incidents where EU and NATO countries experienced airspace breaches by Moscow. Earlier this month, Poland reported an intrusion by at least 20 Russian drones, labeling it a provocation. Similarly, Estonia faced an entry by three Russian fighter jets on Friday, described as “an extremely dangerous provocation.”

On Friday, the European Commission introduced a new sanctions package against Russia, targeting additional Chinese and Indian entities. This package requires approval from EU member states.

Zelenskyy expressed hopes in a Sunday social media post that the 19th EU sanctions package will be “truly painful” and urged the United States to collaborate with the Europeans.
