A meeting involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States is scheduled to occur in Abu Dhabi on Friday and Saturday, as announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday.
This gathering marks the first instance of dialogue between the three nations since Russia’s comprehensive assault on Ukraine commenced almost four years ago. Specific details regarding the participants from each country were not disclosed by Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy remarked, “It will be the first trilateral meeting in the United Arab Emirates. I hope Emirates know about it. Sometimes we have such surprises from the American side.” He further mentioned extensive discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Zelenskyy stated during a Q&A at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, “Russians have to be ready for compromises — everybody has to be ready, not only Ukraine. We will see what the result will be. It’s better than to not have any kind of dialogue.”
After meeting Trump in Davos, Zelenskyy reported, “The meeting was good thanks to President [Trump].” Trump also called the interaction “good” and emphasized, “the war has to end.”
U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner plan to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Thursday to discuss a peace agreement to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The discussions will continue in “military-to-military” working groups in the UAE, according to Witkoff.
Despite Witkoff’s optimistic comments about a potential deal, the Kremlin declined to comment.
POLITICO sought confirmation from the U.S. embassy in Brussels regarding the trilateral meeting in Abu Dhabi but received no immediate response.
