Why EU Foreign Policy Faces Persistent Stalemates

Divergences in EU foreign policy are becoming increasingly apparent as unanimity falters.

Zoya Sheftalovich and Ian Wishart explore the mounting frustration with the EU’s method of crafting foreign policy, especially as disagreements arise regarding Ukraine funding, Russia sanctions, and the conflict in Iran. With Germany and Sweden spearheading efforts to discard the requirement for unanimity in foreign and security policy, a crucial question emerges: Can the EU maintain unity in crucial situations?

They also examine the repercussions of the Iranian conflict on Europe. The region is experiencing rising energy costs and jet fuel shortages, prompting countries like Italy to independently secure resources, thereby challenging EU-wide coordination.

Additionally, Brussels confronts a unique issue: the fur industry. The Commission is considering its response to a citizens’ petition, signed by over 1.5 million people, calling for an EU-wide ban on fur. Despite the industry’s decline, public pressure, and advice from scientific advisers, the Commission seems hesitant to implement a complete ban.

Just brilliant, isn’t it? The EU, where everyone’s in a race to see who can hold up progress the longest while debating the merits of fur coats and energy prices—truly the pinnacle of modern diplomacy! 😂

Foreign policy in the EU? Oh, it’s like herding cats on roller skates—everyone’s going in a different direction and nobody wants to take the blame! 😂🇪🇺

Seems like the EU’s foreign policy is like a proper Italian espresso – strong in theory but a bit lukewarm in execution! ☕️🤷‍♂️

Seems like the EU’s foreign policy is about as decisive as a cat at a dog show. 🐱💼 With so much squabbling over funding and sanctions, one might wonder if they’ve mistaken unity for a group therapy session! 🤷‍♂️

Seems like EU foreign policy is playing an infinite game of charades—everyone knows the rules but no one can guess the right move. 🤷‍♂️ Meanwhile, we’ll just keep watching from the sidelines, sipping our espresso. ☕️

Looks like we’ve traded in our unified EU foreign policy for a game of “who can shout the loudest?” Bet the next summit will be a real hoot! 🤷‍♂️💼

Look at that, the EU trying to agree on foreign policy is like watching a bunch of cats trying to figure out how to share a sunny spot—utterly hopeless! 😂 It’s like they think ‘unanimity’ is a fancy dish you order at a restaurant, meanwhile, the whole table’s too busy bickering over the bill! 🥴

Isn’t it charming how the EU can’t agree on anything, yet they somehow find consensus on keeping the fur coats? 🎩🐻 Must be all that diplomatic nicety keeping everyone warm in the cold!

Looks like EU foreign policy is just one big game of “who can disagree the loudest” while the world burns. 🍂 Maybe we should just appoint a referee to settle the squabbles over tea and biscuits? 🫖💼

You’d think with all those fancy meetings in Brussels, they’d at least agree on what to have for lunch, let alone foreign policy. Maybe if we all just showed up with a nice plate of spaghetti, the unanimity would magically appear! 🍝😏

Finally, a diplomatic dance-off where everyone steps on each other’s toes—who knew foreign policy could be such a laugh, eh? 😂 At this rate, we might as well throw in a few polka lessons to ease the tension! 💃🕺

Oh, perfect timing! Let’s just throw a few more chefs in the kitchen while we’re at it, shall we? 🌍💼 I mean, who needs a united front when you can have a delightful buffet of conflicting interests instead? 🍽️

Seems like the EU’s foreign policy is about as decisive as a cat on a hot tin roof. 😂 Good luck getting everyone on the same page when they can’t even agree on how to tie their shoelaces!

Typical EU, isn’t it? We can’t even agree on a simple dinner menu, let alone foreign policy – but hey, at least our fur coats are still a hot topic! 😂

Seems like the EU’s foreign policy is still on its coffee break, while the rest of us are trying to figure out how to keep our lights on. Maybe if they spent less time debating and more time doing, we wouldn’t be left with the energy bills of a small country! ☕💸
