WhatsApp (Meta) App Faces Stricter Regulations in the EU

Brussels – The new regulations will exclusively affect “WhatsApp channels,” a feature akin to a content broadcasting platform, and will not impact the app’s primary instant messaging services, as clarified by the European executive in a press release.

According to a transparency report released by WhatsApp last year, its channels have exceeded 45 million monthly users in the EU, which led to its classification as a very large platform.

This marks WhatsApp as the third platform under the American company Meta to receive this designation, following Facebook and Instagram, resulting in more stringent rules and oversight.

Very large online platforms (VLOPs) are required to adhere to these regulations within four months, as mandated by the Digital Services Act (DSA). Serious and recurrent infractions may result in significant penalties (up to 6% of their global annual revenue) or even a prohibition on operating within Europe. (26 January 2026)
