Flanders (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – West Flanders expanded Hoppy bike-sharing with 575 bikes at 65 Hoppinpunten across 34 municipalities, including Roeselare, Bruges, Ardoole, and Westhoek, supported by WVI; Piet Delrue highlights ease and sustainability.
As VRT News reported, West Flanders has launched a major expansion of its bike-sharing network. The new system now covers Roeselare, Bruges, Ardoole, and the Westhoek region. A total of 575 bicycles are available, including both regular and electric models. The bikes are located at 65 Hoppinpunten across 34 municipalities.
“This system aligns with Hoppin, the forward-looking Flemish vision for mobility,”
the transport region says.
How is West Flanders expanding the Hoppy bike network to Roeselare, Ardoole, and Beyond?
The Hoppy bike-sharing network works on the “back-to-many” principle. Users can pick up a bike at one Hoppinpunt and return it at any other station in the network without extra fees. The rollout is supported by WVI, the intermunicipal organisation for West Flanders.
“This makes cycling a flexible and sustainable alternative for short trips or the last kilometres of a longer journey,”
they say.
Piet Delrue, Alderman for Mobility in Roeselare, calls the program a major advantage for the city and surrounding areas.
“Residents and visitors can move around easily in Roeselare and reach different neighbourhoods and local points of interest without relying on cars,”
he says.
He mentioned that the system is simple, flexible, and sustainable. For example, cyclists can take a bike at the train station and return it at the church square in Rumbeke. The program encourages more people to cycle daily.
“For a rural municipality like Damme, this is a significant added value,”
says Joachim Cons, mayor of Damme.
“The shared electric bicycles make it easy to cover longer distances and cycle smoothly from village to village or to the city.”
The Hoppy bike-sharing initiative, launched in 2024, aims to enhance sustainable mobility across West Flanders. In August 2024, over 350 electric bikes were introduced in the Dender and Flemish Ardennes regions. By July 2025, the Bruges transport region saw the addition of 195 e-bikes, further extending the network’s reach.
