The musical event held in Central Park during the last weekend of the General Assembly’s high-level week was the flagship event for Global Citizen, the world’s largest movement to end extreme poverty. This year’s lineup featured international stars like Shakira, Cardi B, and Rosé.
Ms. Mohammed took the stage to thank the festival attendees and remind them that only five years remain to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals—a plan for a fairer future for people and the planet. “We still have a way to go,” she told the crowd. “We are moving, but it’s not fast enough and the clock is ticking.”
As a special advisor to former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Ms. Mohammed played a crucial role in advancing the goals and securing the consensus of UN Member States in 2015. Speaking on Friday, she reiterated that $4.3 billion is needed annually to fund the goals and ensure no one is left behind.
Give a Chance to Peace
“What really matters is to give peace a chance for women in Sudan, children in Gaza, and the people of Ukraine. We need peace everywhere,” she said, urging action to ensure artificial intelligence does not create new divisions, that women are included at every decision-making table, for quality education, and for the planet, “from the Amazon to the Congo and every corner of the world.”
The UN deputy chief urged those present to find solutions where others see dead ends and to use their voices to “cut through the noise, demand better from everyone, and reject the globalization of indifference.”
