Waregem – Authorities in Waregem are urging citizens to respect police cordons following a fatal accident on Stormestraat. The incident coincided with the championship celebrations of local football team Zulte Waregem, taking place in the city’s Markt square.
The local police have called for greater public cooperation after an 80-year-old cyclist died in a traffic accident on Sunday. The tragedy unfolded as crowds gathered nearby to celebrate Zulte Waregem’s championship win. Despite clearly marked restrictions at the accident site, several individuals crossed police lines to take photographs, undermining emergency efforts.
Officers faced challenges keeping onlookers out of the restricted zone. Officials emphasize that ignoring safety boundaries disrupts emergency operations during critical moments.
“The tape was put up and ignored,”
said Jana Dewulf, spokesperson for the MIRA police zone.
“People walked into the cordoned off area without permission and there was even verbal aggression.”
Dewulf noted that such behavior is becoming increasingly common, expressing concern about the growing disregard for official boundaries.
“We understand that these kinds of situations attract curious people, but this time it got out of hand. Everyone should know what a red tent means. We urge you to respect the boundaries.”
Rising Concerns Over Public Interference in Police Operations in MIRA Zone
The MIRA police zone, which includes the municipalities of Waregem, Anzegem, Avelgem, Spiere-Helkijn, and Zwevegem, has witnessed a noticeable rise in public interference with police activities. Reports show a 22% increase in unauthorized access to police-controlled areas over the past five years, particularly during major public gatherings.
In 2023 alone, MIRA police recorded over 30 incidents where individuals violated security perimeters, resulting in prolonged investigations and confrontations between officers and civilians.
Local authorities remain concerned about traffic-related fatalities, especially those involving cyclists and elderly pedestrians. According to data from the Belgian Road Safety Institute (VIAS), there were 48 fatal traffic accidents in West Flanders in 2022. Elderly citizens accounted for roughly 35% of fatal cycling incidents nationwide.
Public celebrations such as football championship events continue to pose additional security challenges. In 2023, the MIRA zone reported twelve major incidents related to crowd control, three of which involved aggression—both verbal and physical—toward police officers.
Overall, the statistics highlight a growing strain on law enforcement resources. Increased public defiance and crowd-related tensions are complicating emergency response scenarios, prompting authorities to further tighten intervention procedures and improve public awareness campaigns.

Just when you thought the only thing dangerous at a football celebration was the pint you were holding, it turns out the real risk is a crowd of eager photographers ignoring police tape like it’s just a suggestion. 🤦♂️ Cheers to the growing trend of “let’s see how close we can get to the drama” – who needs boundaries, right? 🍻

Seems like some folks think “do not cross” tape is just an invitation to a VIP area. Who knew the local football celebrations came with a side of chaos and disregard for human life? 🤦♂️ #OnlyInBelgium

Isn’t it marvelous how the fine folks of Waregem can turn a festive football celebration into a lesson on police etiquette? Who knew a red tape meant “please, step right up for the spectacle”? 🙄👮♂️

Seems like the locals took “go get a closer look” a bit too literally, eh? Maybe next time they’ll think twice before crossing a red tape line—unless it’s for a selfie with a trophy. 🤦♂️

Incredible, isn’t it? A championship celebration turns into a masterclass in public disregard—who knew tape meant “please walk through”? 🙄 Top-notch efforts from the locals to turn a tragedy into a photo op! #RespectBoundaries

Oh, brilliant! Nothing screams “celebration” quite like a fatal crash and a crowd ignoring police tape – who knew football could be so educational? ⚽️🙄

Seems like the locals took “celebrating” a bit too literally—who knew a red tape meant “come on in, the water’s fine”? 😏 It’s like signaling a goal in football just to watch everyone pile on the pitch instead of respecting the boundaries!

Oh, of course, because nothing screams “celebration” quite like a police cordon and a tragic accident! 🎉 It’s almost as if some folks think “red tape” means “please come closer and snap a few selfies.” 🤔
