She stated that Europe would evaluate the tariffs and expected additional actions from the White House in the coming days. Since taking office on January 20, Trump has repeatedly delayed imposing tariffs on both U.S. allies and rivals.
“We’re signing today,” Trump announced regarding the protectionist tariffs. “They take effect on April 2, and we begin collecting on April 3.”
Although von der Leyen spoke cautiously, she made it clear that the EU is ready to respond.
“The EU will continue to pursue negotiated solutions while protecting its economic interests,” she said. “As a significant trading power and a united bloc of 27 member states, we will collectively defend our workers, businesses, and consumers across the European Union.”
The tariffs, set to take effect on April 3, pose a serious challenge for the European car industry.
If enacted, the tariffs will have global repercussions. In 2024, the U.S. imported $214 billion worth of passenger vehicles, including from non-European allies such as Japan, Mexico, and South Korea.
