Pope Francis to Be Honored with State Funeral Drawing Global Leaders
Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday, will be honored with a state funeral at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. The solemn event is expected to attract numerous heads of state and senior officials from around the globe, creating a rare occasion for informal diplomatic engagement among world leaders.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, currently visiting Rome for the funeral, announced on Wednesday that he anticipates holding “many meetings” during his stay in the Italian capital.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed interest in speaking with Trump on the sidelines of the funeral. Zelenskyy hopes to discuss Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, as the U.S. administration holds behind-the-scenes discussions with Moscow regarding the conflict’s future.
