Vilvoorde Riots: 9 Arrested, 2 Minors Released with Conditions

Vilvoorde (Eurotoday) – Riots hit Vilvoorde after a scooter crash. 9 arrested. Mayor Jo De Ro urges calm. Police injured, probe ongoing into violence and public damage.

As VRT News reported, the Police arrested 9 people after the riots in Vilvoorde. 5 adults aged 18 to 20 and 4 minors. One of the minors was from Brussels and was sent to the Brussels public prosecutor. The other 3 minors, who live in the Halle-Vilvoorde area, were taken to juvenile court. 2 of them were allowed to go home, but must follow strict rules. The 3rd minor was sent to a closed youth centre because he played an active part in the riots.

The 5 adults were brought before an investigating judge and may face charges for violence against police and damage to public property. The investigation is still going on, and police are looking at video footage and other evidence to see what each person did. Local leaders are asking for peace and are working with youth groups and the community to stop more problems from happening.

What sparked the riots at Vilvoorde station after the scooter crash?

The 24-year-old man who was earlier hit by a police van while riding a scooter was arrested on Saturday afternoon, July 19, 2025, at Vilvoorde station. He was there with a group of young people, talking to shopkeepers and locals.

The public prosecutor said he was arrested because they suspect he took part in the riots the night before. His arrest surprised many, as people had felt sympathy for him after the crash. After his arrest, he filed a complaint with the Etterbeek police, likely about how he was treated.

The police are still looking into both the crash and the trouble that followed. On the night of the chaos, a team from the Federal Judicial Police went to the station to check everything closely. They looked for clues, took pictures, and checked the damage to understand what happened and who was involved.

The city of Vilvoorde is taking it very seriously and has already added extra safety steps around the station. Mayor Jo De Ro said that those who caused the violence must face strong punishment.

He also said that the area is being watched carefully to stop more problems. The investigation will go on in the next few days as the police try to find out the full story and decide if more people should be arrested.

An occurrence took place on Friday night, July 18, 2025, at Vilvoorde station, following a serious incident involving a 24-year-old man on a motorcycle and a police van. The collision has raised broad reactions in the local region, particularly in the youth.

Groups of young people began to clash with the police in what officers called a fast-moving and tense game of cat and mouse. During the chaos, police vans were attacked, and public property like benches and signs was broken. 4 officers were injured in the violence, and 2 of them are now unable to work because of their injuries.

Seems like Vilvoorde’s latest attraction is a riot, not a scooter show. Guess the youth decided that public property needed an upgrade—who knew vandalism was the new black? 😏

Scooter crashes leading to riots? Ah, just another Tuesday in Vilvoorde. I suppose the local youth thought they were auditioning for “Fast and Furious: Brussels Drift.” 🤦‍♂️
