UN Deputy Chief: Fight Against ‘Vicious’ TB Epidemic Severely Underfunded

The World Health Organization (WHO) described the high-level meeting as a groundbreaking step by governments and partners in combating tuberculosis. This meeting follows the Ministerial conference held in Moscow last November, where leaders from 120 countries committed to accelerating progress towards ending tuberculosis. Ms. Mohammed labeled tuberculosis a “vicious epidemic” affecting 10.4 million people globally, driven by poverty, inequality, migration, and conflict. She emphasized the need for a systemic approach considering the social factors perpetuating its spread. To end this global health crisis, enhanced health and social protection systems, increased investment, and better tools to overcome antimicrobial resistance are essential, with around 60,000 cases of drug-resistant tuberculosis reported annually. The Under-Secretary-General advocated for a comprehensive approach that promotes community health and well-being while eliminating disease-specific silos. TB impacts every continent, with over half of new cases in five countries, including Mozambique, the Philippines, and South Africa, having 500 cases per 100,000 people compared to fewer than 10 in high-income countries. Ms. Mohammed stressed the need for more progress to fulfill the UN’s commitment to leaving no one behind. She noted that progress is achievable if efforts are informed, community-empowered, and strategically funded. WHO will lead inter-UN initiatives to support government efforts, working with civil society and partners to boost the TB response. The WHO’s recent Global Tuberculosis Report highlighted insufficient country actions and funding as the main challenges. The meeting concluded with a Political Declaration on tuberculosis, endorsed by Heads of State, aiming to enhance action and investment to eradicate TB and save lives.

Seems like they’re really onto something here, eh? A “vicious epidemic” and yet we can’t seem to scrape together a few extra coins to fight it – classic! 😏💸

  2. Oh, brilliant! Let’s just keep underfunding the “vicious” TB epidemic while we sip our lattes and chat about the weather. Seems like a solid plan, eh? 🤷‍♂️💰

Seems like the UN’s idea of battling TB is a bit like using a Band-Aid on a bullet wound—good luck with that! 🧐💸

Oh, fantastic! Nothing like a “groundbreaking” meeting to tackle a “vicious” epidemic while we’re all still waiting on that last cup of coffee ☕—cheers to the power of good intentions and empty pockets! 💰

  5. Oh, brilliant! Just what we need – another underfunded initiative to tackle a “vicious epidemic.” You’d think by now, someone would give a proper budget to this little nuisance instead of just chatting about it over a coffee in some posh conference room. 🙄💸

Imagine that, in a world where cash is king, we’ve somehow managed to underfund a ‘vicious’ epidemic. Brilliant strategy, really! 🙄💰#Priorities #LetsFixThat

Oh, brilliant! Just what we need—more meetings and declarations while the TB epidemic is having a party. Maybe if we throw more cash at it, this “vicious” little bugger will just pack its bags and leave? 🤑💼

Isn’t it charming how we can all sit around a table and declare war on a “vicious” epidemic while our wallets remain firmly shut? Classic Europe, prioritizing fancy summits over actually funding the fight—bravo! 🥳💸

Seems like the UN’s idea of fighting TB is like trying to fill a bathtub with a teacup – good luck with that! 😂💸 #ViciousEpidemic #Underfunded

  10. Oh, brilliant! It’s reassuring to know that while we’re busy fighting “vicious” TB with one hand tied behind our backs due to lack of funds, the world leaders are making grand declarations—truly a masterclass in crisis management! 🙄💸

  11. Guess it’s just another day in paradise, where fighting a “vicious” epidemic is still on the back burner while budgets get tighter than a pair of lederhosen after Oktoberfest. 🍻 Who knew saving lives was such a luxury?

Oh, fantastic! Nothing like a strong commitment from world leaders to tackle a “vicious” epidemic—right after they’ve finished sorting out the budget for their next lavish gala. 🍾💸

Seems like we’re all set to tackle the “vicious” TB epidemic with the same enthusiasm as a cat chasing its own tail—plenty of talk, but where’s the dosh, eh? 💸

Seems like we’re really rolling up our sleeves to tackle this “vicious” TB epidemic, huh? Maybe if we throw a few more euros into the pot, we might just win the battle—if only we could fund it like we do our winter holidays! 🇪🇺💸
