The Ukrainian Army General Staff confirmed the attack on Tuapse on Tuesday, stating the refinery is part of Russia’s army supply chain in Ukraine’s occupied regions.
Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s unmanned systems forces, suggested this was just another in a series of attacks. “Tuapse 3.0. Groundhog Day remake. Regular thermal disposal of black [Russian] gold, caused, of course, by spontaneous combustion,” Brovdi remarked in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
Since mid-April, Ukraine has been systematically targeting Russia’s Tuapse refinery and port. After an attack on April 20, local authorities needed four days to extinguish a blaze, with locals expressing concerns about an environmental disaster and reporting black rain over the city on social media.
Prior to the third attack on Tuapse, Mayor Sergei Boyko reported that local utility workers were still cleaning oil products from the city and port. Earlier this year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the need for Kyiv’s forces to continue bombing oil refineries to disrupt Russia’s primary financial resources for war.
Russian forces also frequently attack Ukrainian power plants and ports in Odesa. The Kremlin’s most recent attack, on Monday, led to a 6,000-ton sunflower oil spill in the Black Sea.
