Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a ceasefire for Friday and Saturday during the scaled-down World War II Victory Day parade in Moscow, which now includes only marching troops. This event is important for the Kremlin. Moscow warned of a severe response if Ukraine targets the parade, threatening a massive missile strike on Kyiv’s center if any disruption occurs.
In response, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy stated that the Kremlin fears Ukrainian drones could interfere with the parade and noted that Moscow has not formally requested a ceasefire from Kyiv. Zelenskyy proposed a rival truce for Tuesday and Wednesday, urging Russia to adhere to it for its ceremony’s safety.
Zelenskyy mentioned Ukraine would reciprocate based on Russia’s media and social media appeals for a ceasefire during the parade, and criticized the ongoing violence as incompatible with public celebrations. He accused Russia of 1,820 ceasefire violations, including shelling and air attacks.
The Russian defense ministry reported multiple attacks on Ukraine on Tuesday and accused Ukrainian forces of targeting areas in Russia and occupied Crimea.
