Ukraine (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Ukraine’s intelligence chief Vasyl Malyuk, architect of high-profile covert operations against Russia, has been forced to resign by President Zelenskyy.
In a meeting with the president on Monday, Vasyl Malyuk, who was named the Hero of Ukraine last year, reportedly gave up his position as head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).
Malyuk said he will stay with the SBU to oversee “world-class asymmetric special operations” against Russia after announcing his retirement on the agency’s official Telegram channel.
He wrote:
“I am leaving my post as head of the Security Service. I will stay in the system to carry out operations that continue to inflict maximum damage on the enemy. A strong, modern intelligence service is key to our state’s security.”
Zelenskyy announced that Malyuk, who was in charge of Operation Spiderweb, the audacious destruction of Russia’s strategic bombers last year, would now be in charge of unconventional warfare.
He said:
“I had a meeting with Vasyl Maliuk. I thanked him for his combat service and proposed that he focus on this line of work specifically.
There must be more Ukrainian asymmetric operations against the occupier and the Russian state and more solid results in eliminating the enemy.
This is where Vasyl is at his strongest, and this is exactly what he will continue to do within the Security Service of Ukraine.”
When a swarm of unmanned aerial vehicles emerged from lorries and attacked strategic bombers on airfields deep within Russia in June of last year, causing an estimated $7 billion in damage, Malyuk was praised.
According to the Ukrainska Pravda newspaper, which has access to people close to Malyuk, Andriy Yermak, the president’s former chief of staff, planned the spy head’s termination as retaliation.
In November, an anti-corruption disquisition included a hunt of Yermak’s flat. Indeed though he was no way officially charged with a crime, he later abnegated.
Others in the government suppose Zelenskyy is eager to remove well- known and well- liked individuals from office because he has an eye on the forthcoming presidential race.
In 2024, Gen. Valerii Zaluzhnyi, who had been bandied as Zelenskyy’s implicit successor, was removed from his post as commander of Ukraine’s army.
He has maintained a quiet profile since being appointed minister to the United Kingdom.
Maj Gen Yevhen Khmara, who led the SBU’s elite nascence special operations team, has taken Malyuk’s job temporarily.
How will Maliuk staying in SBU affect operational command?
Vasyl Maliuk’s uninterrupted presence in the SBU, leading a devoted asymmetric operations unit, will probably streamline rather than disrupt functional command structures.
Maliuk retains direct authority over high- impact operations like Operation Spiderweb, freeing the new SBU chief, Colonel Yevhen Khmara, to concentrate on executive and intelligence duties; Zelenskyy emphasized spanning up special forces experience without losing Maliuk’s political moxie.

Looks like Malyuk’s just taking a little holiday from the spotlight while still pulling the strings behind the scenes—classic move, really. 🤷♂️ Who knew resignations could be this strategic? Looks like Malyuk’s just handing in his resignation like it’s a loaf of stale bread, while still planning to whip up world-class covert operations. Classic move, but I guess when you’re the spy chief, it’s all in a day’s work, innit? 🤷♂️ Looks like Vasyl took a page out of the “How to Resign Gracefully” handbook—stay in the game but dodge the spotlight. Classic move, mate! 😏 Seems like Malyuk is taking the “out of sight, out of mind” approach while still pulling the strings behind the curtains – classic move! 🕵️♂️ But hey, who needs a spy chief when you’ve got a ‘world-class’ backup plan, right? 😂 Seems like Malyuk’s just been handed a promotion disguised as a resignation—classic move, eh? 🌍 “Stay in the system,” he says, like he’s not just been given a VIP ticket to the same old show. 🍿 So, Malyuk resigns but sticks around to “inflict maximum damage” – talk about the classic ‘don’t let the door hit you on the way out’ move! 😂 Just another day in the office for the Ukrainian power players, eh? Seems like Vasyl Malyuk’s resignation was just a little game of musical chairs, eh? 😏 Can’t wait to see how many more “heroes” they can shuffle around before someone remembers to actually fight the war! 🥳 Seems like Malyuk’s getting a promotion to the “behind-the-scenes” club while Zelenskyy plays musical chairs with his generals. Who knew espionage had such a cushy retirement plan? 😂 Looks like Malyuk’s got a front-row seat to the circus after resigning, just without the popcorn. Can’t wait to see how many more “world-class” operations he can pull off from the sidelines—cheers to the merry-go-round of power! 🍻 Looks like Malyuk’s just taking a cheeky detour from the driver’s seat to the backseat – still in the car, just no longer holding the steering wheel. 🚗💨 Meanwhile, Zelenskyy must be prepping for his own game of musical chairs with the presidential playlist! 🎶 Looks like Malyuk’s just been promoted to the prestigious role of “retired spy chief,” where he can oversee operations from the comfort of his sofa. 🛋️ After all, nothing says “world-class” like running things from a Telegram channel, right? 😂 Looks like Vasyl’s having a bit of a game of musical chairs, eh? 😂 Who knew leading a spy agency would be as stable as a pub on a Friday night? 🍻 Looks like Malyuk’s taking a little holiday from the hot seat while still playing the game behind the scenes—classic move, eh? 🤷♂️ Hope his retirement party comes with a side of covert ops! 🍾💼 You know things are getting interesting when the guy who blew up a few bombers gets pushed out to focus on “unconventional” warfare—sounds like a fancy way to say he’s still in the game but without the title. Such a classic move, really—like swapping your seat on the Titanic but still keeping the captain’s hat. 😂 Oh, splendid! Just when you think you’ve reached the pinnacle of spy drama, they go and make it a soap opera. Who knew intelligence work came with a side of political chess? 🕵️♂️📉 Looks like Malyuk’s taking a “holiday” from the big chair, but don’t worry, he’s still got his hands in the cookie jar! 🍪 Just what we need, more spies in the kitchen while the chef gets the boot—classic Ukraine! 😂 Guess the job title ‘Spy Chief’ didn’t come with a comfy office chair after all! But hey, at least he’ll still be pulling strings from the shadows like a true maestro, right? 😏🎭 Seems like being a spy chief in Ukraine is a bit like being the captain of a sinking ship; you get to steer until the water’s up to your neck, then it’s time to hand over the wheel and keep paddling in the same direction. Cheers to “world-class asymmetric operations”—sounds like a fancy way of saying, “I’m still in the game, just in a different seat!” 😂 Looks like Malyuk went from being a hero to a ‘consultant’ overnight—because who wouldn’t want to oversee world-class operations from the sidelines? 🤔 Just what we need, more “asymmetric” moves that look suspiciously like a game of chess, but with fewer rooks and more drones! 🕵️♂️ Seems like Malyuk’s just taking a sabbatical from the spotlight—nothing like a good ol’ resignation to spice up your résumé while still pulling the strings behind the scenes. Typical, eh? 🤷♂️ Ganshoren (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A 43-year-old man, KM, was arrested for manslaughter after 55-year-old CP, a Brazilian, was found dead in Ganshoren. Both had alcohol issues; investigation and forensic checks are ongoing. Leuven (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A fire destroyed the ground floor of a Lepelstraat house in Leuven overnight. No injuries were reported. Police arrested a 38-year-old suspect after investigators found signs of arson. The US action made “all States less safe around the world”, said Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the High Commissioner.
