Ukraine is addressing quality concerns after reports surfaced that one in 10 Ukrainian-manufactured 120 mm mortar shells from a recent production batch is malfunctioning on the front lines, Ukrainian journalists revealed earlier this month, citing widespread complaints from military personnel.
In response, the country’s defense ministry announced it had launched a quiet investigation into the source of the issue. Pending the outcome, use of the affected batches of Ukrainian-made mortar shells has been suspended. “Imported shells will be delivered instead,” the ministry stated.
The State Bureau of Investigation has also opened a criminal case to determine the cause of the faulty mortar shells. The ministry has pledged to hold officials accountable, vowing to make personnel changes based on the findings of the investigation.
Additionally, the ministry has committed to strengthening quality control processes and enhancing monitoring of shell storage conditions to prevent similar issues in the future.
