Paris, France, 25 August (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – French authorities are urging people to act quickly when France heatwave alerts are triggered, as official guidance stresses that health effects can begin during the earliest stages of unusually hot weather.
Météo-France operates a four-level heat vigilance system — green, yellow, orange and red — designed to warn the public and authorities when temperatures may pose a danger. The system takes account of local conditions and health risks rather than relying on a single national temperature threshold.
Heat alert thresholds determine level of risk
Yellow vigilance can be issued for a short period of intense heat lasting one or two days that presents particular risks to vulnerable or highly exposed people. It can also apply to a persistent period of heat lasting more than three days.
Orange vigilance indicates a heatwave involving intense conditions for at least three consecutive days and nights and potentially posing a health risk to the wider population.
Red vigilance is reserved for an extreme heatwave considered exceptional because of its intensity, duration or geographical extent, with potentially severe health and wider societal consequences.
Météo-France says departmental decisions draw on biometeorological indicators based on minimum and maximum temperatures averaged over three rolling days. Forecasters also consider factors including humidity, pollution, the timing and duration of the heat, major outdoor events and pressures on the healthcare system.
Official advice calls for early precautions
Official guidance says people should remain somewhere cool where possible, drink water without waiting until they feel thirsty, close shutters and windows during the day and ventilate homes at night.
People are also advised to avoid strenuous activity and alcohol, cool their bodies with water and check on relatives and others who may be particularly vulnerable. Météo-France advises calling France’s emergency medical service on 15 in the event of illness or distress linked to extreme heat.
The agency warns that heat can have immediate effects on the body, with possible consequences including dehydration, headaches, nausea, muscle cramps and heatstroke.
France experienced exceptional heat in 2026
The renewed emphasis on rapid action follows an exceptionally hot summer. France experienced a major heatwave from 17 to 30 June, followed by another national heatwave lasting from 4 to 19 July.
Météo-France said 72 departments were placed under red heat vigilance during the June episode, an unprecedented number since heatwaves were incorporated into its vigilance system in 2004. June 2026 was also France’s hottest June on record, with an average temperature of 22.7°C, 3.8°C above the 1991–2020 norm.
During the July heatwave, 37 departments reached red vigilance and another 46 were under orange vigilance at the episode’s peak on 12 July.
