Ukraine has imposed sanctions on several high-profile Georgian officials and political figures over their involvement in suppressing anti-government protests and derailing the country’s pro-European aspirations. “We must not lose anyone in this region — neither Georgia, nor Moldova, nor Ukraine. We must stand united in defending ourselves against Moscow,” the statement emphasized.
Among those sanctioned are Grigol Liluashvili, head of Georgia’s State Security Service, and Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, a former Dynamo Kyiv football player. Additionally, several lawmakers and businessmen linked to the ruling Georgian Dream party were targeted. The sanctions include asset freezes, travel bans, and other restrictions within Ukraine.
The move follows allegations of violent crackdowns on Georgian citizens advocating for a European future, a goal many feel has been undermined by Georgia’s government. “The Georgian people have the right to a European future. I hope partners will support sanctions against those who betrayed their people,” said Vladyslav Vlasiuk, Ukraine’s sanctions commissioner.
In solidarity, the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania also introduced similar measures against Georgian officials earlier this week.
