French Mirage fighter jets successfully intercepted Russian cruise missiles, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Facebook. He also confirmed that American-made F-16 jets participated in repelling the attack.
The first batch of French Mirage 2000 fighter jets arrived in Ukraine in early February—eight months after French President Emmanuel Macron pledged their delivery. Additionally, France has ramped up support by sharing intelligence with Kyiv to help counter Russian assaults, especially after the U.S. ceased its intelligence-sharing efforts with Ukraine.
According to Zelenskyy, all Russian missiles and drones from the overnight attack targeted critical infrastructure essential for daily life. Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko reported that Russian forces specifically hit energy and gas production facilities in an ongoing effort to cut off power and heat, aimed at harming civilians.
Naftogaz, Ukraine’s state-owned energy company, stated that this marked the 17th attack on its energy infrastructure. The company confirmed damage to gas production facilities but reported no casualties.
Zelenskyy used the moment to emphasize that meaningful steps toward peace must begin with halting Russia’s aggression.
“Ukraine has been striving for peace since the very first moment of this war,” he said. “The key objective is to force Russia to end its attacks—ensuring silence in the skies by banning missiles, long-range drones, and aerial bombs, and securing peace at sea to guarantee safe navigation.”
