Leadbeater, while introducing the bill, implored her fellow lawmakers to consider “the heartbreaking reality and human suffering that far too many individuals endure due to the current system.”
She emphasized that the proposed legislation would grant terminally ill individuals greater choice, autonomy, and dignity during the final stage of their lives.
However, Conservative MP Danny Kruger, a leading opponent of the bill, urged caution. He argued that MPs should not succumb to “a vote for despair,” but instead work to initiate “a proper debate about dying well, where we aim for something better than a state-assisted suicide service.”
Currently, laws across the U.K. prohibit individuals from receiving medical assistance to end their lives.
